The month of April marks the end of an era at Friars Moor as we say goodbye to Julian and Alison who will be retiring from the practice on the 30th April. It is almost impossible to put into words what they have achieved at Friars Moor, the gratitude we all feel for having been privileged to work alongside them and the impact they have had on Friars Moor and the businesses of so many Vale farmers and pet owners over the years.
Before starting at Friars Moor in 1994, Julian qualified from Cambridge and spent time studying and teaching at universities in the US & Canada. It was in Canada that he met a Canadian vet student, Alison. Having returned to the UK they settled after a few years in Dorset, with Alison joining the practice in 1998. Together they have shaped Friars Moor, guiding it through its transformation and growth into two businesses that today employ over 70 people.
Julian is incredibly intelligent, thoughtful and an adept communicator. He is unassuming, rarely flustered (albeit occasionally caught swearing in his car!) and always considerate of those around him. The positive influence that Julian has had on all the farms he has been involved with has been immense. One farmer described how, had he listened and acted on all the advice given to him by Julian he could have transformed his business and prevented many of his worries!
Alison’s involvement and influence within the small animal team has been colossal. She is always calm, a truly steadying influence with the ability to clearly see the best path to travel on when faced with a conundrum. Her rapport with both clients and all members of staff is particularly special and we know she will be sorely missed by so many of her regular clients who have benefitted from her wealth of experience and kind and caring nature for so long.
Together Alison and Julian have sustained and nurtured the culture at Friars Moor, striving to make it a truly inclusive family environment to work within. Their dedication to the practice is unquestionable, they are always available to provide advice, a second opinion and a wealth of skills and expertise.
When Julian and Alison joined the practice in the nineties, it would have been impossible to predict the transformation that would occur to FM over the next 27 years. Friars Moor will be forever indebted to the incredible dedication that they have given to the businesses. We thank them both wholeheartedly and wish them a very, very enjoyable and well-deserved retirement.
